In Happy Valley the BAFTA winning actress plays police sergeant Catherine Cawood who works to avenge her daughter's death in the sleepy rural Yorkshire town of Calderdale.
She won the Best Supporting Actress award at this year's ceremony for her performance in Last Tango in Halifax but it was her role in Coronation Street that catapulted her into the nation's hearts.
Playing gutsy barmaid Raquel, she conquered the cobbles when she turned up in Bettabuys supermarket and fell in love with deputy manager Curly Watts.
Raquel returned to the Street at the - literal - turn of the Millennium to ask Curly for a divorce and to tell him that they had a daughter together.
She left with her divorce and having given her character some closure - though there's always the chance of a return in the ITV soap.
